Department of Gynecology
Gynecology and obstetrics are often called twin specialties that deal with problems associated with the female reproductive system. While Obstetrics is a branch that deals with pregnancy and complications related to it, and Gynecology deals with women who are not pregnant.
The doctor specialized in gynecology is called a gynecologist who can diagnose and treat problems related to female reproductive parts, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and breasts. Gynecologists can provide medical as well as surgical treatment.
What does a gynecologist do?
A gynecologist takes care of overall reproductive health from the day women get their first period to the time they reach a post-menopausal state. Therefore, it is highly recommended that women begin seeing a gynecologist at the time of puberty or when they are sexually active.
Additionally, Gynecologists perform some standard tests related to women’s health like examinations of the breast and pelvis, pap smear tests, cancer screenings, vaginal infections, and their treatment, etc.
They are experts in diagnosing and treating many disorders associated with the reproductive system like fibroids, infertility, cysts, and pelvic pain. They also treat people with ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, and other reproductive organ cancers.
Some gynecologists also take care of women during pregnancy and birth because they practice as obstetricians. When a gynecologist has obstetric training, they are referred to as OBG-GYNs.
Procedures performed by a gynecologist.
Gynecologists generally treat yeast & bacterial infections, irregular periods, excessive menstrual pain, painful sex, and conditions associated with menopause that may require surgical intervention.
Surgical procedures
A gynecologist performs only specialized surgical procedures for problems associated with female reproductive organs.
Some of the common surgeries and procedures that gynecologists can perform are:
- Hysterectomy: It is a surgical procedure that involves reproductive organs, which include the uterus (womb), fallopian tubes, etc. This procedure is most common among women of age between 40 to 50 and more.
- Oophorectomy: In this procedure, one or both the damaged ovaries are removed.
- Tubal Ligation: It is often referred to as female sterilization. This surgery is done to prevent pregnancy by getting your tubes (fallopian tubes) tied off.
- Cervical Biopsy: A small amount of cervical tissue is removed for further investigation if diagnosed any problem after a pelvic exam or pap smear test
- Salpingectomy – It involves removing the damaged fallopian tubes.
- Cone biopsy – involves removing precancerous cells from the cervix detected during a pap exam.
- Dilation and Curettage: Abnormal uterine tissues are removed in this procedure.
- Labiaplasty: A surgical procedure to reshape the labia minora (external genitalia) – the folds of skin surrounding the opening of the vaginal canal
