PCOS Treatment in Hyderabad
PCOS is one of the common hormonal disorders (an endocrine disorder) that affects women in their reproductive years. Researchers’ report claims that approximately 8-10% of Indian women are likely to suffer from PCOS problems during their reproductive years. About 80-90% of women with menstrual irregularities are due to this PCOS condition. A well-known fact about PCOS is that it is not a disease but rather a group of characteristics that may result in different conditions like Infertility, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
There is often confusion between PCOS and PCOD, thinking both are the same, but they differ in many ways. PCOD results from hormonal imbalances in which the ovaries release a large number of immature or partially matured eggs.
While PCOS is a metabolic disorder of the endocrine system and tends to be more severe. This condition causes the ovaries to produce high levels of androgen (male hormones), which triggers the formation of more follicles preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries (anovulation). These unreleased eggs might turn into cysts eventually.
Symptoms of PCOS
- Infertility is a common concern for 70-80% of women with PCOS. Disorders related to menstruation like irregular periods or absence of periods affect around 60-85% of women with PCOS. Unusual bleeding from the uterus, where the quantity and duration of bleeding are inconsistent.
- The prevalence of obesity is 50-76 % in women with PCOS. It is essential to understand that PCOS does not cause obesity but that hormonal imbalances can trigger weight gain and obesity exacerbates the condition, which increases the likelihood of metabolic dysfunction.
- PCOS can be asymptomatic in 20% of women.
- Facial and body hairs grow too thickly.
- Skin problems like acne.
- A diffuse balding pattern.
- Dark pigmentation
PCOS and Infertility
As discussed above, approx 74 % of women with PCOS suffer from infertility issues. The primary cause of PCOS is hormonal imbalance. In general, every woman has small amounts of male hormones in their body, but PCOS women tend to have higher levels of male hormones (androgen) in their bodies. This can result in ovulation problems.
PCOS can also affect egg quality in some women due to persistently high levels of LH. Other hormonal imbalances include insulin resistance.
Treatment for PCOS
It is highly recommended that you consult a fertility specialist if you have PCOS or suspect that you do. There are instances that simple diet changes and practising recommended exercises enabled many women to conceive naturally even with PCOS conditions.
Women who are overweight should focus on losing weight first.
Some women may have a healthy weight but still have ovulation problems; fertility drugs and gonadotropin injections may help.
Oral contraceptive pills can also help to manage PCOS symptoms, but they may not cure the condition. The pill acts on the hormonal imbalance caused due to PCOS and fixes them. However, once you discontinue taking the pill, symptoms may recur.
In severe cases, surgical procedures like laparoscopic ovarian drilling might be helpful.
